While NCERT did not comment on the subjects being dropped, officials said the changes are part of regular updates and are not linked to the development of new books as per the New Curriculum Framework (NCF). Changes have been made to the political science textbooks of classes 11 and 12, among others.
According to a document detailing the changes prepared by NCERT’s syllabus drafting committee, references to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement have been tweaked “to suit the latest developments in politics”.
“More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were massacred during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002,” says Chapter 8 on Secularism in the Class 11 textbook earlier.
It was changed to “More than 1,000 people were killed during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002″. NCERT’s rationale behind this change is that “community suffers in any riot. It can’t just be a community.”
Regarding Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, earlier textbooks stated “India claims that this area is under illegal occupation. Pakistan describes this area as Azad Pakistan”. “However, this is Indian territory illegally occupied by Pakistan and known as Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK),” the amended version said.
NCERT’s rationale behind this change is that “the change introduced is fully in line with the latest stand of the Government of India regarding Jammu and Kashmir”.
Regarding Manipur, earlier textbooks said, “The Government of India succeeded in pressuring the Maharaja to sign a merger agreement in September 1949 without consulting the popularly elected assembly of Manipur. This caused much anger and discontent in Manipur, the repercussions of which are still being felt.” “
The modified version states, “The Government of India succeeded in persuading the Maharaja to sign the merger agreement in September 1949.”
Chapter 8, Recent Developments in Indian Politics, omits references to “Demolition of Ayodhya”.
“What is the legacy of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and the destruction of Ayodhya for the nature of political mobilization?” Changed to “What is the legacy of the Ram Janmabhoomi Movement?”
The same chapter omits references to Babri Masjid and Hindutva politics.
The previous paragraph read: “Fourth, a series of events culminated in the demolition of the controversial structure in Ayodhya (known as the Babri Masjid) in December 1992. This event symbolized and initiated several changes in the country’s politics and intensified debates about its nature. Indian nationalism and secularism. These developments are linked to the rise of the BJP and the politics of ‘Hindutva’.”
It was amended to read: “Fourth, the centuries-old legal and political dispute over the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya began to influence Indian politics, leading to various political changes. The Ram Janmabhoomi Temple movement, which became the central issue, transformed the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. Secularism and democracy Speech direction on. These changes resulted in the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya following the Constitution Bench decision of the Supreme Court (which was announced on November 9, 2019).
A reference to the Gujarat riots in Chapter 5 titled “Democratic Rights” was omitted from the caption in a new collage.
Earlier version was – “Did you notice the mention of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in the news collage on this page? These references reflect the growing awareness of human rights and the struggle for human dignity. Many cases of human rights violations in different areas, such as the Gujarat riots, are being brought to public attention from across India.”
It changed to “Many cases of human rights violations in various fields are being brought to public attention from all over India.”
NCERT last week informed CBSE schools that new textbooks have been prepared for classes 3 and 6 while textbooks for other classes remain unchanged as per NCF.
However, after the commencement of the new session, successive changes will now be introduced in the books which are not yet in the market.
